Come and meet your balanced self through the path of mediation
Located in a small town called Agastyamuni situated at the bank of river Mandakini, Agasteshwar Mahadev is known as the place where Agastyamuni mediated for many years to achieve his balanced self. Surrounded by beautiful hills, the temple falls in Rudraprayag district. It is one of the most famous temples in the state and it has archaeological significance too which makes this place and this temple very close to the locals and their generations.
Many stories are told about Saint Agastya and the temple. This place also has a temple of his idol lord Mahadev who is worshipped not only by the people of this town but also by the vast population of this state. One time the temple was heavily flooded and it got destroyed but after the flood when the people of the town visited this temple, they saw Saint Agastya's kund established there and therefore they started worshipping him. Another story about Saint Agastya says that when he went to this place for the first time, it was haunted by two monsters who were known as Ataapi and Vitaapi. They were very dangerous as they used to hunt people by inviting them to lunch. The story says that they used to invite people to lunch by disguising themselves and when people reached out to them for dinner, one of them used to turn himself into a dwarf, therefore, hiding into their lunch. That way the monster used to enter inside their body and when the other monster calls him, he’d come out of their body by cutting and therefore eating them. But when they tried to do the same with Saint Agastya, it didn’t work as he used some spells which killed one of the two monsters. The second monster tried to fight him in a battle where he was killed and therefore the town got rid of those two monsters. When he was meditating, many Gods (Devta) saw him as they were residing on earth at that time after they suffered heavy loss from demons (Daanav). After looking at their condition, Saint Agastya got very angry and as a result, the demons started to burn and fall from heaven. But due to this, all the other saints got scared of him which led him to worship Mahakaal. Mahakaal got very happy with him and that’s how Agasteshwar Mahadev temple was established.
Agastyamuni is famous for his unbelievable meditations. When he was meditating, he fought hard with his own self and meditated for years and he eventually met with his real self. Whoever visits this temple gets to learn more about their real self and also get rids of all the wrong deeds they have done.
