Overview

Baijnath is a small ancient town located on the left banks of the holy Gomati River in Uttarakhand, India. Being one of the best places to visit in Kausani, Baijnath is situated at a distance of only 16 km from Kausani. Enveloped in stories, mythologies, and magnificent past, Baijnath is a quite mesmerizing destination that is recognized for its ancient temples. Known as Kartikyapura earlier, Baijnath was once the capital of Katryri Kings of Kumaon. Baijnath is chosen as one of the top four places to be linked by the “Shiva Heritage Circuit” in Kumaun. Its religious and historical importance makes it a must-visit place in Bangeshwar.

Devoted to Lord Shiva, Baijnath Temple is one of the most religious and noteworthy places to visit in Baijnath. This sacred place attracts many devotees as it holds great significance. The Baijnath Temple actually is a temple complex that was built by Katyuri Kings. These temples house the idols of Ganesh, Shiva, Parvati, Kuber, Chandika, Brahma, and Surya. It is believed that Lord Shiva and Parvati got married on the conflux of Garur Ganga and River Gomati. The temples are devoted to SivaVidyanatha, the God of Physicians. Moreover, the village derived its name from this temple. Except for an exquisite view, this small town offers a blend of worship and beauty to your soul and senses. The main temples have a very beautiful idol of Parvati in black stone. You can reach the temple through the riverside by climbing some steps that are made of stones and were constructed by the orders of Katyuri queen. It feels like stairs to heaven. A temple of Bamani also lies on the way to the main temple. Outside this temple complex lies a lake that is full of fishes, known as Golden Mahaseer. It is a key tourist attraction and the pilgrims are allowed to offer chana and aata to the fishes.

Baijnath Temple is built in the traditional nagara architectural style which owes its origin to Orissa. This temple will not just enamor you with its superb architecture, but its artful representation of the Hindu mythology like idols, carving, and sculptures. To greet you at the magnificent entrance of the temple is the idol of Nandi, who is known as God Shiva’s chariot while Shivlingam is at the center of the temple and that is worshiped by thousands of tourists every year. A very interesting fact about this temple is that it was built in just one day. Devotees should keep in mind that rather than the face, the deity’s backside is worshiped here. Mahashivratri is a great time to come and offer your devotion to Lord Shiva here.
