Bishnupur, also known as Vishnupur, is believed to have derived its name from Vishnu, the Hindu Goddess. Bishnupur is not only an amazing tourist spot popular for its baluchari sarees and terracotta work but is also visited by the pilgrims and devotees also who seek peace and calm in the ancient temples located here. All the temples located here are a carrier of architectural marvels and significant histories.

The local Hindu Kings, known to pay tribute to the Samudra Gupta ruled Bishnupur under the entire Gupta period. After a long time of obscurity, when the land wavered between being a vassal state and a small independent principality. This land was also known as Mallabhum following the rule of Malla over this place. The Mala rulers constructed the popular terracotta temples in the 17th century and 18th century and were known to be Vaishnavites. The Bipodtarini Devi’s legends are also linked with Bishupur’s Malla Kings. For nearly a thousand years, Bishnupur was the Mallabhum’s Malla Kings capital. Bankura was also a part of this until their power diminished when the Mughal Empire also weakened under this dynasty’s last monarchs. The Malla King Veer Hambir’s patronage along with Bir Singha Dev and Raja Raghunath Singha Dev, his successors developed Bishnupur as main center of Bengal’s culture. Most unique terracotta temples that this town has were constructed in this period.

Except for the exclusive architecture of this period, this town is also popular for its Baluchari sarees that are made using the tussar silk and terracotta crafts. The royal patronage here also gave a great rise to the Bishnupur Gharana of Hindustani Classical Music and Bishnupur painting school.
