Chakrata is a quaint tourist place far from the pollution and crowd, situated at 2118 m above the level of the sea in Dehradun District. Blessed with panoramic views and natural bounty, Chakrata has Mussoorie to its east and Kinnaur of Himachal on the west. Encircled by coniferous forests, it is a popular delight for the loners since it’s away from the busy city life.
Chakrata is strikingly beautiful and an absolute treasure of tall oak trees and red rhododendrons, interspersed with patches of glittering blue sky and vistas of snow-covered Himalayas. Chakrata is also called Jaunsar-Bawar, influenced by a Jaunsari tribe which once resided in this area. The area of Chakrata was earlier a part of Sirmaur territory. Later it was conquered by Gorkhas followed by the British after they defeated the Gorkhas. On request of Delhi’s British residents in 1816-17, Captain Birch made the first settlement in Chakrata. Later a cantonment of the British Indian Army was established by Colonel Hume of 55th Regiment in 1866. The cantonment was occupied by the officers and troops in April 1869. Chakrata Tehsil became a part of the Dehradun district in around 1901.
