Chakrata is also called Jaunsar-Bawar, influenced by a Jaunsari tribe which once resided in this area. The area of Chakrata was earlier a part of Sirmaur territory. Later it was conquered by Gorkhas followed by the British after they defeated the Gorkhas. On request of Delhi’s British residents in 1816-17, Captain Birch made the first settlement in Chakrata. Later a cantonment of the British Indian Army was established by Colonel Hume of 55th Regiment in 1866. The cantonment was occupied by the officers and troops in April 1869. Chakrata Tehsil became a part of the Dehradun district in around 1901.
