Overview

An ancient temple in the heart of Rishikesh, Bharat mandir is known to be the one of the most sacred temples in the city. It is said that in the seventeenth century lord Vishnu was pleased by the hard penance of Raibhya Rishi, and said that he will reside in the place as Hrishikesh Narayan and the place was thus known as Hrishikesh.

It is also believed that the Pandavas during their journey to Heaven stayed here to worship Hrishikesh Narayan. It is also believed that during the reign of Ashoka , the place was converted to a Buddhist monastery and Lord Buddha himself visited the temple.

Every year the temple sees the Saligram being taken for a holy bath and then back to his shrine for a holy bath. The temple is also adorned with a old tree, that is a combination of three different trees with roots intertwined in a way that microcosms the entire existence of the place.

The place is one of the most religious places according to the Hindu mythology and is considered to be one of the most beautiful confluence of two religions today.
