
Feroz Shah Kotla
Feroz Shah Kotla is a beguiling fortress built in medieval period by Emperor Feroz Shah Tughlaq in the year 1354. The word ‘Kotla’ means Fort and hence comes the name derived by its creator – Feroz Shah Kotla.
Located amidst the old Delhi and New Delhi –It is one of the ancient heritages. As per the historical records, the Sultan decided to shift his capital from Tughlakabad to Ferozabad due to the scarcity of water.
Amongst the highlighted features of this fort is the Ashoka Pillar –This pristine polished sandstone pillar was especially moved from Topra Kalan (near Haryana) on the instructions of Sultan Feroz Shah and re-erected on the fort. There is a script engraved on the pillar in brahmi language, which was later deciphered by James Princep.
Other point of attraction surrounded by the fort are Jami Masjid, lush-green gardens, baolis (step-wells).
Walking towards the Northwestern side of the pillar is the circular baoli. It is centralised in the lush-green garden. It is connected by a large underground canal which serves as a source to disseminate water into the well. In the earlier times, it served as a creadible source to get relief from the scorching summers. Royal folks used to bathe and relax in this baoli.
