Haldwani, being the biggest city of Kumaon area, is situated in the district of Nainital. Since it is located in the immediate Kumaon Himalayas foothills, it’s also called “Gateway to Kumaon.” It is the third most populous city of Uttarakhand. Haldwani is located at a height of 424 m above sea level. With a rich cultural heritage and spectacular natural beauty, Haldwani calls for a longer time visit instead of just a stopover. Haldwani is the former point of trading of the Kumaon area.

Haldwani, the name of this place, is an anglicized edition of Halduvani, the Kumaoni word. Halduvani refers to the forest of Haldu. It is named after a tree of Haldu. These Haldu trees were abundantly found in the area before deforestation. Hence, this place was called Halduvani regionally until the commissioner of Kumaon, George William Trail, renamed it as Haldwani in 1834.

Historically, the Bhabhar area was a part of the Kumaon Kingdom. It came under the territory of Kumaon after Chand Dynasty’s King Gyan Chand visiting Delhi Sultanate. The Mughals also tried to quickly take over the hilly area, but they did not succeed because of the hard terrain. However, in 1816, when the Gorkhas were defeated by the British to gain control of Kumaon and Gardner became Kumaon’s Commissioner. Afterward George William took over as Kumaon’s Commissioner and renamed the place as Haldwani in 1834. In 1882, the Bareilly-Nainital road was established followed by Bhojeepura-Kathgodam railways in 1884. Both these establishments helped create this town in a huge trading post. The very first train came at Haldwani on April 24, 1884 from Lucknow.
