Kiratpur Sahib: A city with hidden stories

Overview

Kiratpur city is situated in Rupnagar district in the Indian state of Punjab. There is a Gurudwara called Patal Puri where the Sikhs immerse the ashes of their loved ones.

Guru Sri Hargobind Sahib was the founder of the city. The succeeding seventh and eighth Guru was born here. The sacred head of Guru Tegh Bahadur was brought from Delhi and handed over to Guru Gobind Singh and his followers. This happened in 1675 and he was the ninth Guru of the Sikhs. The sacred head was taken to Anandpur Sahib in procession to be cremated by the tenth Guru. The Government erected a pillar here which had inscriptions stating "The Lord Protected their paste mark and sacred thread.

Pir Buddan Shah

Pir Buddha Shah was a Sufi Saint. He was believed to live a life span of 200 years. He lived in Kiratpur long before it came into existence. Various stories connect him and the city. According to myths, it is believed that in respect of baba the airplanes from Jammu take a dip at the time of landing and taking off. Itis believed that believers from across the country visit his tomb on his grave which is next to the airport.

Virasat-e-Khalsa Anandpur Sahib

This is a Sikh museum that was built to celebrate the glory of Sikh history. The museum has relics that depict the great freedom fighters of the Sikh community. The scriptures were written by the tenth Guruis also on display. There is a bridge that connects the two structures. The smaller one has an entrance with a double-story library. Various research and reference activities are being carried out by the readers. There are huge halls and galleries for exhibitions that accommodate at least 400 people. There is a memorial building on the second complex. The reflection of the sky falls on the rooftops of these complexes. The locality looks mesmerizing by the scenic view surrounding this beautiful complex. The Museum is closed on Mondays. It is open from 10 am to 04:30 pm during the weekdays and opens from 8 am to 6 pm on Sundays and other public holidays.

Damdama Sahib

This holy place is strictly prohibited to people other than the Sikh religion. Damdama Sahib was officially declared as the Fifth Takht by the Tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, on 18th November 1966. It is situated 28 km from Bathinda in the Talwandi Village.

Gurudwara Patalpuri Sahib

The Gurudwara is situated on the banks of river Sutlej. This is the holy place where ashes of the loved ones are immersed in the river by the Sikhs. The Gurudwara has a huge hall and a bridge that allows the devotees to pass the river. There are parking lots near Gurudwara. There are living rooms inside the premises.

There are various mouth-watering dishes in Kiratpur. They serve excellent and hygienic foods. Chhole Bature is a spicy curry with Indian bread. Dal Makhani, Sarso da Saag and Makki ki Roti are all a part of the people here.

It is known for its extreme dominance in flavor as well as its richness like the whole of Punjab. They have their own set of delicacies that are different from others. The flavors vary in each part of Punjab.

The main side dish you will find in every meal is the curd and the raita. The flavors are also different from the others. People love these flavors when they are spicy and full of ghee. During the festival periods, some of the finger-licking dishes like Seekh Kebab, Lahori boti Kebab, and Naan are a must-try. The hot jalebis and gulab jamuns are to be tasted as well. There are masonry ovens called Battis in this region which are grilled. These ovens are also called chulla made from bricks or stones and in many houses made of clay.

There is no airport in Kiratpur. Another airport is at Chandigarh and Ludhiana. You can travel by taxi or take a bus from the airport.

There are express and passenger trains that connect Kiratpur to other major cities. Trains from Delhi stop here.

The road trip to Kiratpur is a different experience. There are national highways that connect each other with a lovely view. Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad are some of the major cities that connect Kiratpur through highways.

The best season to visit Kiratpur is when the heat is not that scorching and the cold is bearable. Make sure that you plan your trip between October and March.

There are luxury hotels from airport and railway stations. There are plenty of rooms if you are planning to visit in groups or for many parties and functions. Some hotels have staff who are well educated especially in management and hospitality. The food provided is hygienic. The housekeeping service is well disciplined.

There are 5-star hotels in Kiratpur as well. There are different packages based on location and customer ratings. There are star hotels with full fledge security and 24 hours check-in. Wifi connections are also available. The hotels are mostly 2-3 km from the railway stations. There are swimming pools and free parking lots as well.

There are hotels within affordable rates as well. But the quality of service would be no less than the luxury ones. The rooms are clean but less spacious than the luxurious ones. Some rooms are not that luxurious but not that cheap. The services are clean and disciplined as well.
