Nestled deep in a remote part of Uttarakhand, Munsiyari is a small hamlet situated in the district of Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. It sits at a height of nearly 2298 m above sea level. According to Hindu mythology, Pandavas of Mahabharata went to their journey to heaven via Munsiyari. It’s believed that the 5 huge Panchauli peaks represent the 5 “chulhas” where Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas, cooked the very last meal for all Pandavas. The Panchauli peaks lie at the finishing point of the Kumaon area in the district of Pithoragarh. They form a watershed between the Darmaganga and Gori Valleys. Panchauli peaks are the star-attraction of Mansiyari since they look similar to chimneys. The Munsiyari town lies on the old salt way from Tibet. It is adorned at the Johar Valley’s entrance, extending along Goriganga River to the Milan Glacier. The area was earlier inhabited by the Bhotiyas or Shaukas, but their business stopped in around 1862 after the Tibet’s border was sealed. The natives then migrated to some other places.
