
Spread under the Shivalik Hills of the Himalayas, Roorkee is a small city of North India in the district of Haridwar. Roorkee sits at an elevation of 879 m above the sea level. The city is well-known for highly reputed universities, colleges, businesses, and industries. Moreover, the city is home to the first engineering college of Asia, presently known as IIT Roorkee.
According to the legends, Roorkee derived its name from Ruri. She was the wife of Rajputs tribal chieftain. Before 1840, this city was a little hamlet having mud huts located on the bank of Solani River. In April 1842, digging work formally started on Upper Ganges Canal, under a British Officer. Roorkee was soon developed in a town. In 1868, the Roorkee’s municipality was formed after becoming home to Bengal Miners and Sappers in 1853. Currently, it’s home to an extremely big army base. It’s also the headquarter for the Bengal Engineering Group & Center.
