Nestled in the foothill of the majestic Himalayas on the bank of River Alaknanda is the historic city of Srinagar. There is another Srinagar in India that is thriving in the beautiful hills and valleys of Uttarakhand. Srinagar boasts of the twisting river Alaknanda, dense forests, and majestic mountains. Srinagar derived its name from the Sri Yantra. It was a huge rock with evil powers. So, whoever looked at the rock would die immediately. It is believed that this rock took thousands of lives just before Adi Shankaracharya. He took the responsibility to rejuvenate the whole Hindu religion in the eighthly century. So, he visited Srinagar and then turned the Yantra upside down followed by hurling the rock into the Alaknanda river. The Sri Yantra is still thought to be lying submissive in the river’s underbelly. And the region is called Sri Yantra Tapu. As per history, the city came into fame after it became the capital of the Garhwal Kingdom. The Garhwal Kingdom was founded by King Ajay Pal who moved the capital from Chandpur Garhi to Srinagar Place. Until the British arrival, Srinagar was Garhwal Kingdom’s capital for centuries. Moreover, the town witness two catastrophic events recently. A powerful earthquake shook the whole area of Uttrakhand in 1803 and was mainly devastating for Srinagar Almost all the relics and structures of this town were wiped out. The dangerous event hit the town in 1894 again and the town was swept away by more than 10000 million cubic ft of water completely. Later, the modern Srinagar was established during 1897-99 by the British. Srinagar got an urban status in the year 1931. Currently, Srinagar has become a major cultural, education, and economic center in the area.

Baikunth Chaturdashi Mela: Garhwal regions’ most famous festival, the Baikunth Chaturdashi Mela is organized in October-November every year after 14 days of Diwali.
