Masked in complete mystery and a challenge for adventurers, the Bali Pass trek is believed to share its history with the Kauravas and the Pandavas. The place is considered the land of the Kauravas. The Har Ki Dun Valley here has snow-covered mountain ranges as its backdrop along with dense woods of deodar, conifer and pine. It is also associated with Lord Krishna and is thus called Har, which is the short form of Hari. The meaning of Dun is Valley.

Then there are surpassing sights of the Swargarohini and Kala Nag mountain ranges. The entire route is bliss for the trekkers who think of camping at this place.

Undulating pastures surround the Ruinsara Lake, and it lies right in the centre of the Swargarohini Ranges. You will also come across the beautiful sights of Ruinsara Valley and Govind Pashu National Park. The views are simply captivating. During the winter season, the entire trekking trail is covered with snowmaking the expedition even more challenging. Therefore, it is best to take up trekking post monsoons. 

Travel To and From the Bali Pass Trek

Reaching the starting point of the Bali Pass trek is not a difficult thing to do. There are both air and rail options available.

  • The Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport located at a distance of 25 kilometres from Dehradun. There are daily flights available from Delhi to the city.
  • You can even go by train. The Dehradun Express and Nandadevi Express trains will take you straight to Dehradun. From Dehradun, you can hire a cab directly for Sankri.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Dehradun to Sankri

From Dehradun railway station to Sankri Market by car or by bus. Total distance is 210 kilometres, and it will take approximately eight to nine hours to reach Sankri.

Day 2 : Sankri to Taluka to Chelugad camp

Start trekking from the Sankri village to Taluka. A taxi can also be taken. Total distance is 11 kilometres. Same day trekking to Chelugad camp, which is 12 kilometres from Taluka and will take approximately four to five hours to be covered on foot.

Day 3 : Chelugad camp to Debshu Bugyal

Trek starts from Chelugad camp to reach Debshu Bugyal lying at a distance of 7 kilometres. This will take you 3 to 4 hours.

Day 4 : Debshu Bugyal to Ruinsara tal

Start trekking from Debshu Bugyal to the Ruinsara Tal which is 12 kilometres away and will take five to six hours to reach.

Day 5 : Ruinsara tal to Odari Camp

Commence from Ruinsara Lake to reach Odari Camp lying at a distance of 7 kilometres. This will take up 5 to 6 hours of the trekking journey.

Day 6 : Odari Camp to Bali pass to Damini

Trek starts from Odari Camp to the Bali Pass and down to Damni at a distance of 11 kilometres. This will take approximately 4 to 5 hours to cover

Day 7 : Damini to Yamunotri temple

Trekking from Upper Damni to the Yamunotri Temple which is also called Janki Chatti. It lies at a distance of 11 kilometres and will be covered in six to seven hours.

Day 8 : Yamunotri to Dehradun

Driving back to Dehradun from Janki Chatti either by taxi or bus. It is 185 kilometres apart and will generally take 8 to 9 hours to be covered.
