Explore the Vridha Badri – The First Badri

The Vridha Badri temple is a Hindu sanctuary that is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Located in Animath town of Chamoli district, the temple is at an altitude of 1380 meters. Uttarakhand, where the temple is situated, also known as the land of Gods is among the perfect destinations for all the Hindu pilgrims. Situated 7 km from Joshimath, Lord Vishnu is worshipped as an old man at Vishal Badri.

Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, the “Vridhaa Badri Temple” is one of the most enchanting holy places with spectacular scenic beauty surrounding it. Snow-capped peaks and beautiful dense forests in the background make it worthwhile for every traveler. Offering life transforming spiritual experience along with adventure, the temple is thronged by visitors throughout the year.

The adventure activities include sky diving, cruising, trekking to some of the fascinating peaks, as well as skiing through some of the exquisite slopes and enchanting destinations. Moreover, the Joshimath-Auli Cable car nearby is the longest cable-car ride in India and offers another attraction.

Before Badrinath was recognized as one of the Char Dhams by Adi Shankaracharya, the Badrinath idol carved by the Devashilpi Vishwakarma was enshrined at this temple and worshipped here. With the appearance of Kalyuga, Vishnu expelled himself from this place. However, later Adi Shankara found the partially damaged idol of Vishnu in Narad-kund and established it at Badrinath sanctuary.  So, Vridha Badri is also known as the first Badri.

Narad ji performed austerities to please Lord Vishnu here. Answering his prayers, Lord Vishnu appeared as an old man before Narada and blessed him. So, the idol of Lord Vishnu at Vridha Badri is in the form of an old man. The temple remains open throughout the year with the local people celebrating numerous festivals for express their delight and indulge in age old practices which holds them to their roots.
