Binsar is derived from ‘bin-sar’ which means ahead. A popular local legend mentions that a fierce battle was held between the Binsar King and a local deity- Golu Devta. However, because of some skepticism, this local deity was beheaded. Due to this, his head fell down at Kaparkahan and his truck fell down at the Gairad Dana Golu close to the Binsar National Park. Hence both of the places have Golu Devta’s ancient temples.
Binsar is known to be the Chand Dynasty’s summer capital. It was ruled by the Chand Dynasty from the 11th century AD to 17th century AD. Binsar has an old Shiva temple known as Binsar Mahadev that was built in the 16th century by Chand Dynasty’s Raja Kalyan Chand.
