Ukhimath is a town located Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. The town sits at a height of about 1317 m above the sea level. If you are looking for spirituality and peace, Ukhimath can be the ideal place for you. It is a popular pilgrimage center. Ukhimath has many ancient shrines devoted to Lord Shiva, Usha, Goddess Parvati, Mandhata, and Anirudha. Thousands of tourists visit these temples every year. You can also relish the resplendent vistas of the Himalayan range like Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, and Neelkanth peaks.
The former name of Ukhimath was “Ushamat.” It was kept after the name of Banasur’s daughter Usha. According to the Hindu Legend, Lord Krishna’s great-grandson – Anirudh got married to the demon king’s beautiful daughter Usha at this place. It was since then this place is known as Ukhimath. Ukhimath refers to the maternal home of Usha.
During the winter season, idols from Madhyamaheshwar and Kedarnath Temple are brought to Ukhimath. They are then worshipped here only for 6 months. Lord Kedarnath’s Utsav Doli is brought here during winters. Puja of Lord Omkareshwar for the whole year and Lord Kedarnath in winters is done here.
Being a religious spot, most of the sightseeing locations at Ukhimath have a mythological implication, mainly from the Mahabharata era. Though there are a limited number of places to visit, each has its own significance: Madhyamaheshwar Temple, Deoria Tal, Chopta Hill Station, Omkareshwar Temple, Sari Village, Tungnath Temple, Ardha Narishwar Temple and Chandara Shekara Mahadev Temple
Trekking: Deoria Tal which starts near Ukhimath is a famous trekking trail. If you are an adventure lover, it is going to take you through the nice and attractive hamlets, majestic Himalayan views and greenery around.
Pilgrimage: Ukhimath is a very famous pilgrimage spot, well known as the abode of idols from Kedarnath and Madhyamaheshwar in winters when these temples become inaccessible because of heavy snowfall.
